INSIDE THE PILLOW

…a small velvet box. My hands began to shake because I was certain it contained jewelry for another woman. My husband grabbed it, but I opened it before he could stop me.

Inside was a lock of gray hair, a hospital bracelet, and a note bearing his mother’s name. She had been diagnosed with cancer two months earlier and had started chemotherapy while I was away. The perfume belonged to her.

My husband had brought her to our apartment after every treatment because she lived alone and did not want the rest of the family to know. She cleaned compulsively whenever she felt afraid, which explained why our usually messy apartment had been spotless.

I asked why the box was hidden in the pillow. He said his mother had placed the hair there herself. Before losing it to treatment, she wanted to save one lock for her granddaughter, who had always loved brushing Grandma’s hair.

Then my husband played a voice message. His mother was laughing weakly as she said, “If she smells my perfume, tell her I wasn’t another woman stealing you. I was only your frightened mother borrowing my son for one night.”

I sank onto the bed, ashamed of every accusation I had screamed. The next morning, I carried the pillow to the hospital and apologized. My mother-in-law smiled and asked me to keep the box safe. Months later, after she recovered, that same perfume became the scent that reminded me how quickly fear can turn love into suspicion.
